The New York Times’ Stuart Thompson reports dozens of fringe news websites, content farms, and fake reviewers are using artificial intelligence (AI) to create inauthentic content online, according to two reports released by NewsGuard and ShadowDragon. The AI-generated content includes fabricated events, medical advice, and celebrity death hoaxes, raising concerns about the technology’s potential to reshape the misinformation landscape online.

There are parallels between today’s fervor for A.I.-powered chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard and the excitement over the Netscape browser from the 1990s. TikTok outsources some of its content moderation/review to third-party BPOs (Atrium and Telus). Two BPO-employed reviewers claim they suffered psychological harm from their work. The lawsuit claims the BPOs were TikTok’s proxies. Allegedly: TikTok provided all “instructional” and “training” materials. TikTok required content moderators to use its proprietary “TCS” software to review its videos, and it exercised “full control” over that software.
