Amidst growing public attention on artificial intelligence (AI), the UK government recently published its whitepaper detailing its “pro-innovation” approach to AI. Whitepaper In July 2022 the AI Regulation Policy Paper set out plans for a risk-based, adaptable regulatory framework.
On 29 March 2023, the UK Government published a WhitePaper entitled “A pro-innovation approach to AI regulation” (“WhitePaper”). The WhitePaper elaborates on the approach to AI set out by the Government in its 2022 AI Governance and Regulation Policy Statement (“Policy Statement” – covered in our blog post here ).
The CMA’s review is part of the UK’s wider approach to AI regulation which will require existing regulators to take responsibility for promoting and overseeing responsible AI within their sectors (for further information on the UK Government’s strategy, including its recent AI WhitePaper, see our blog post here ).
Though it was confirmed in the AI whitepaper that the DRCF will not perform all functions contemplated by the UK’s AI framework, the government confirms that it will play a defining role in the UK’s AI regime by “ enhancing regulatory alignment and fostering dialogue on digital issues across regulators”.
