For nearly two decades, one person reigned supreme over the world of legaltechnology. Such was Monica Bay’s prominence and influence that, when she retired in 2015 after 17 years as editor of LawTechnology News , Thomson Reuters honored her with her name and image emblazoned above Times Square.
ROSS was ahead of its time in striving to use artificial intelligence to empower legal research. It started in 2014 at the University of Toronto as a student-built entrant in a cognitive-computing competition staged by IBM to develop applications for its Watson computer. He is also cofounder of the LawNext LegalTechnology Directory.

It was as if a veil had been lifted, revealing a hidden dimension of the law that had always been there, but that we had lacked the tools and the imagination to perceive. It was a field that was still in its infancy, but one that held enormous promise for unlocking new insights into the complex interplay of law, technology, and society.

To us, this anniversary provides as good an excuse as any to reflect on what has been an amazing decade for legaltechnology. That journey’s too long, and probably too boring, for this quick piece so for now, I want to shout out ReInvent Law organizers Dan Katz and Renee Knake Jefferson. If we only knew what was to come!
